Attention to the Applicants of SLI Chinese Program at Long Beach:

The Mandarin Chinese Summer Language Program will begin accepting applications for the fourth cohort in February 2010. Completed applications must be submitted by March 5th, 2010. Students accepted to the fourth cohort will spend six weeks in Taipei at the Mandarin Training Center. Faculty from CSU and from National Taiwan Normal University will provide an enriching Mandarin only language learning environment.

This cohort will have four phases of study:

1. Intensive study of Mandarin Chinese in Taipei at the Mandarin Training Center of the National Taiwan University for six weeks (June 21-July 30, 2010);

2. Online learning with teachers from Beijing and a reading course with local instructor in Fall 2010;

3. Online learning with teachers from Beijing and a reading course with local instructor in Spring 2011;

4. Intensive study in Shanghai International Studies University, Shanghai, China for six weeks (June-July 2011).

 

Two courses will be offered during the first phase: a 3 unit course CHIN 301 Advanced Chinese and a local advanced spoken Chinese course offered by NTNU. The second and third phases of study are non-credit maintenance program to keep up language proficiency. The fourth phase (second summer study abroad) will include one reading/writing course offered by a CSU instructor and one advanced spoken language course taught by a local instructor. One unit credit for CSULB CHIN 499 will be granted.

 

Cost: $600 program fee only for each summer phase (to be collected at the first orientation of each summer study. Tuition, accommodation and international travel expenses will be compensated by scholarship. Students pay for meal and books.)

 

Eligibility for application: minimum of 2 year study of Chinese, GPA 3.0 or higher.

 

Deadline of application: March 5, 2010

 

Application fee: $30 (Check only, payable to CSULB Foundation, Memo: SLI summer program, to be mailed in with application package)

 

Test: Applicants will take the SAT in Chinese and an oral interview on March 20 (site: CSU Long Beach campus. Details will be announced to applicants.)

 

Acceptance notification: March 22 (Only the applicants who meet the required SAT score and oral proficiency level will be selected. This date may be subject to change.)
